Dr. Scott J. Goldberg

Scott J. Goldberg, Ph.D., is Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning at Yeshiva University. Dr. Goldberg is responsible for advancing the teaching and learning at YU’s undergraduate and graduate schools through 21st century methods and media, including online and blended learning, as well as developing new educational programs locally and globally. From 2007 – 2013, Dr. Goldberg served as the inaugural Director of the Institute for University – School Partnership, working closely with organizations, agencies, and institutions to improve the quality and sustainability of schools. He is also Associate Professor at YU’s Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education. He serves on various national panels and committees that address the most challenging issues in Jewish education today, from the shortage of qualified leaders for our schools, to the economic challenges facing Jewish education. Dr. Goldberg is an internationally recognized expert in various educational and psychological topics including: online/blended learning, systems of support for students, differentiated instruction, the connection between learning disabilities and behavior problems, multilingual literacy development and assessment, religious development and assessment, and the effects of media on learning and behavior. Dr. Goldberg started his career as a teacher of children with learning disabilities and developed a private practice to counsel and advocate for individuals with disabilities and their families. He holds a Ph.D. in Applied Psychology from New York University, an M.S.Ed. in Special Education from Bank Street College of Education in New York, and a B.A. in Jewish Studies from the University of Chicago. Dr. Chaya Gorsetman

Chaya R. Gorsetman, Ed.D is Clinical Associate Professor of Education and Co-Chair of the Education Department at Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University. She specializes in supervision of student teachers and curriculum studies, with a strong emphasis on the constructivist theory of education. Her research has focused on mentoring novice teachers in Jewish day schools and as the Educational Director of the Educational Leadership Advancement Initiative of the Lookstein Center of Bar Ilan University, she has been mentoring those in educational leadership positions. Additionally, she is interested in how gender is expressed in day schools and as such served as the director and co-author of the JOFA Gender and Orthodoxy Curriculum Project, Bereshit: A New Beginning— A Differentiated Approach to Learning and Teaching. More recently, she co-authored a book, Educating in the Divine Image: Gender Issues in Orthodox Jewish Day Schools, published October 2013, Hadassa Brandies, which won the 2013 National Jewish Book Award. Dr. Gorsetman is a member of the Israel International Research Group on Jewish Education in the Early Years. Rabbi Lawrence Hajioff

Rabbi Lawrence Hajioff serves on the Judaic studies faculty of Stern College for Women. Originally from London, England, Rabbi Hajioff graduated with honors in political science from Manchester University. After working for two years for MTV in news production, and winning the national competition ‘Jewish Stand-Up Comedian’ of the Year, Rabbi Hajioff traveled to study in Israel and then Monsey to receive his rabbinical smicha ordination from Yeshiva Ohr Somayach. Rabbi Hajioff has worked extensively with young Jewish drug addicts, and in 2004 received an award from the Town of Ramapo for his work on their behalf. In 2005 Rabbi Hajioff joined the faculty of Stern College for Women at Yeshiva University. In 2006 he received the “Professor of the Year” award in Judaic Studies from the senior year students at Stern. Rabbi Hajioff also works for Birthright Israel in New York as their official Rabbi and educational director. He has been instrumental in implementing programs for Birthright Israel in Manhattan such as the very successful adult bar and bat mitzvah program which some four hundred people have completed so far. He also leads trips to Israel and Poland three times annually for some three hundred participants. Rabbi Hajioff also teaches on the Mechina Introductory Judaic studies program at Stern College. This program includes Shabbatonim on and off campus, and a summer learning program in Israel at the YU campus. He teaches introductory Judaic studies courses, which cover all the foundations of Jewish thought, as well as a lower intermediate level course covering all the Jewish holidays, and an intermediate level course on the Sabbath. He has developed a new course introducing kabbalistic ideas in Jewish thought. President Emeritus Richard M. Joel

Richard M. Joel became Yeshiva University’s fourth president on September 21, 2003, and was named Bravmann Family University Professor in April 2010. Over the past 10 years, Joel has built upon the illustrious tradition of this storied institution by placing a renewed emphasis on the student experience, academic excellence, Torah scholarship and communal involvement. With these advancements, and guided by the distinctive belief in education as a process of “ennobling and enabling” young women and men to build whole and meaningful lives, Yeshiva has emerged as North America’s Torah-informed university. Rabbi Dr. Josh Joseph

Josh Joseph is the senior vice president at Yeshiva University where he has operating responsibility for the administrative and academic aspects of the University, ensuring strategic planning and implementation of restructuring initiatives. Recently, Josh successfully defended his dissertation, earning his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania in Higher Education Management. A native of Montreal, Josh completed his undergraduate degree with honors at Penn as well. He received rabbinic ordination from YU-affiliated Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, while completing a Master’s in Jewish philosophy at YU’s Bernard Revel Graduate School. He also completed fellowships and certificates at NYU’s Wagner School of Public Administration, as well as Harvard’s Institute of Higher Education. Josh previously worked at a hedge fund, as a community rabbi, served as the executive director of the Orthodox Caucus, and director of social entrepreneurialism at YU’s Center for the Jewish Future. Rabbi Joshua Kahn

Rabbi Joshua Kahn serves as the Head of School of the Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy/ Yeshiva University High School for Boys (MTA). He is a graduate of Yeshiva University’s Yeshiva College, Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, and Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, where he is completing his doctorate in education. Prior to MTA, Rabbi Kahn served as the Associate Principal for Judaic Studies and Dean of Student Life at Torah Academy of Bergen County. He pioneered initiatives like the Senior Mentoring and Beit Midrash Programs and organized community programming and disaster relief missions. Dr. Rona Novick

Rona Novick, Ph.D., is Dean of the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration.  She received tenure after serving on the faculty at Azrieli for seven years.  She directed the Fanya Gottesfeld Heller Doctoral Program in Jewish Education and Administration for the past 6 years.  Dr. Novick also holds the Raine and Stanley Silverstein Chair in Professional Ethics and Values.  Dr. Novick is the Co-Educational Director of the Hidden Sparks program, providing consultation to day schools and Yeshivas, and holds a voluntary appointment in Child Psychology at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Dr. Novick received her Ph.D. from Rutgers University and completed her doctoral internship at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.  She developed the Alliance for School Mental Health at North-Shore Long Island Jewish Medical Center and served as its director for eight years, authoring the BRAVE bully prevention program for schools.  She is recognized for her expertise in behavior management and child behavior therapy and has published scholarly articles and book chapters on school applications of behavior management, special education, children and trauma and bully prevention and social emotional learning in schools.  She has delivered numerous presentations at national and international conferences, focusing on her research interests in parenting and parent-school partnerships, child anxiety disorders, social-emotional learning, special education and the behavior and development of young children.  She is the author of a book for parents:  Helping Your Child Make Friends, and editor of the book series Kids Don’t Come With Instruction Manuals. Dr. Karen Shawn

Karen Shawn, Ph.D., is Visiting Associate Professor of Jewish Education at the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration of Yeshiva University, Senior Fellow of Azrieli’s Institute for University-School Partnership, and co-editor of PRISM: An Interdisciplinary Journal for Holocaust Educators, a publication of Yeshiva University. A former public school English teacher, she was the middle school assistant principal for secular studies at the Moriah School. She taught for a decade at the Yad Vashem Summer Institute for Educators from Abroad and served at the same time as the educational consultant for the American Friends of the Ghetto Fighters’ Museum. The founder of the Holocaust Educators’ Consortium, an international, interreligious Community of Practice, she has lectured and written extensively on Holocaust education. The author of the widely-used text The End of Innocence: Anne Frank and the Holocaust (1992, NY; ADL), her most recent edited volumes are an anthology of Holocaust narratives and an accompanying teacher’s guide entitled The Call of Memory: Learning about the Holocaust Through Narrative (Shawn & Goldfrad, 2008, Teaneck, NJ: Ben Yehuda Press). Rabbi Michael Taubes

Rabbi Michael Taubes is Rosh Yeshiva at RIETS, and has served as Head of School at the Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy – Yeshiva University High School for Boys, as well as a past member of the rabbinic faculty of Yeshiva College. He is also the spiritual leader of Congregation Zichron Mordechai in Teaneck, New Jersey, delivering regular Shiurim and lectures both there and at the Beis Medrash of Bergen County, housed in Teaneck’s Congregation Bnai Yeshurun. His classes are well known for their breadth of sources and clarity of presentation. Rabbi Taubes has been involved in formal and informal Jewish education for more than thirty years, serving both in the classroom and in various administrative posts. An alumnus of Yeshivat Har Etzion (“Gush”) in Israel where he was a student of Rav Aharon Lichtenstein, zt’l, Rabbi Taubes attended Yeshiva College and was honored upon graduation in 1980 with an award for excellence in Talmud. He subsequently studied in the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary for several years in the Shiur of the revered Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, zt’l, and from where he received his ordination. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Jewish Education from Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf Graduate School and then spent several years learning in Yeshiva’s Marcos and Adinah Katz Kollel, headed by Rabbi Hershel Schachter, shlita, with whom he continues to maintain a close relationship. Recognizing the need to spread Torah to people outside the sphere of influence of the yeshiva classroom and the Beis Medrash, Rabbi Taubes helped found The Jewish Learning Experience of Bergen County, a flourishing adult outreach institution, which he directed for many years and with which he remains affiliated. Rabbi Taubes is the author of The Practical Torah, a collection of articles on topics in Halachah based on the weekly Parshah, as well as numerous essays on an array of Torah subjects appearing in many Jewish publications.
